Electrodeionization (EDI) is a new technique for preparing ultra-pure water (high-purity water) that organically links electrodialysis membrane separation skills and ion exchange skills. It uses polarization appearance pairs during electrodialysis The ion exchange resin in the fresh water chamber undergoes electrochemical regeneration.

The EDI membrane stack is mainly composed of an alternately arranged cation exchange membrane, concentrated water chamber, anion exchange membrane, fresh water chamber, and positive and negative electrodes. Under the effect of a DC electric field, the cations and anions in the ion exchange resin in the fresh water chamber migrate along the channel formed by the resin and the membrane toward the negative electrode and the positive electrode. The water chamber constitutes concentrated water. Together, the cations and anions in the EDI feed water communicate with the hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions in the ion exchange resin to form ultra-pure water (high-purity water). The over-limit current causes many hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions produced by water electrolysis to successively regenerate the ion exchange resin. Traditional ion exchange, chemical exchange regeneration is needed after the ion exchange resin is full. The resin in the EDI membrane stack is regenerated successively through the electrolysis of water. The operation is continuous, and no acid-base chemical regeneration is required.
