Structure and composition of pilot system of sewage treatment plant

The pilot system at the wastewater treatment plant is a scaled-down version of the actual treatment plant. It tests and evaluates different treatment processes and technologies before large-scale implementation and includes the following elements:

1. Influent Sampling Point: This is where the raw sewage is collected and introduced into the pilot system. It is usually designed to mimic the influent characteristics of the actual treatment plant.

2. Pretreatment Unit: The pilot system may include a pretreatment unit to remove large solids, debris, and grit from the influent. This can involve processes like screening, grit removal, and sedimentation to protect downstream equipment.

3. Primary Treatment: In this stage, the pilot system may include processes like sedimentation or flotation to remove settleable solids and floating materials from the wastewater. This helps in reducing the organic load and suspended solids.

4. Secondary Treatment: The pilot system may incorporate various secondary treatment processes to remove organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens from the wastewater. Common methods include activated sludge, trickling filters, rotating biological contactors, or membrane bioreactors.

5. Tertiary Treatment: Depending on the requirements, the pilot system might include tertiary treatment processes to further polish the effluent. This can involve methods like filtration, disinfection, chemical precipitation, or advanced oxidation.

6. Sludge Handling: The pilot system may also have provisions for sludge handling, including processes like thickening, dewatering, and drying. This allows for the evaluation of sludge management techniques and the potential for resource recovery.

7. Instrumentation and Monitoring: The pilot system is equipped with various instruments and sensors to monitor and analyze the performance of different treatment processes. Parameters such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and nutrient concentrations are typically measured.

8. Control System: A control system is implemented to regulate and optimize the operation of the pilot system. It helps maintain the desired conditions and allows for adjustments to be made during the testing phase.

The structure and composition of the pilot system simulate the key treatment processes of a full-scale sewage treatment plant. It provides a controlled environment for testing and evaluating different technologies, allowing optimization and decision-making before large-scale implementation
