Principle and application of electrocoagulation water treatment

Jun 08,2019

The slurry formed by electrocoagulation is easier to dispose of and dehydrate than the traditional alumina or iron oxide slurry. Because the main metal oxides or hydroxides have no residual charge.

The flocculation products produced by electrocoagulation are generally larger than those produced by chemical flocculation, and contain less bound water. In addition, they are similar in acid resistance and stability, and can be quickly filtered out. Compared with chemical treatments, especially those that produce hydroxides, the emissions from electrocoagulation process contain less TDS. If the water needs to be reused, very low TDS levels will reduce the cost of water quality restoration.

The electrocoagulation process can remove the smallest colloidal particles, because the electric field neutralizes any remaining charges, making flocculation easy to occur. In general, the electrocoagulation process avoids the abuse of chemicals, thus eliminating the steps of neutralizing additional chemicals and secondary pollution caused by the addition of high concentration chemicals. Bubbles produced by electrolysis usually carry contaminants to the upper layer of the solution, which is very easy to concentrate, collect and use mechanical fishing devices to remove.

The electrolysis process in the electrocoagulation unit is controlled by electricity and has no mechanical components, so the maintenance cost is very low. Adding sodium hypochlorite into the water can help to reduce biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). If wastewater contains high levels of organic compounds or dissolved ammonium (NH4+), sodium hypochlorite should not be added to avoid the production of trihalomethane (THMs) or other chlorinated organic compounds. Sodium hypochlorite can be produced by an electrochlorinator.

Due to the excellent removal of suspended particles by electrocoagulation and the simplicity of electrocoagulation operation, a test conducted by the US Naval Research Institute shows that the most ideal application scenario for industrial wastewater treatment electrocoagulation technology is as a pretreatment equipment for "ultrafiltration-reverse osmosis" and "microfiltration-reverse osmosis" multilayer membrane treatment systems. Electrocoagulation technology for industrial wastewater treatment provides protection for low-pressure membrane. Electrocoagulation is also effective in removing fouling from membrane pore (such as silica, alkaline earth metal hydroxides and transition metal groups), which can not be removed by a single chemical agent.www.khnwatertreatment.com
